Who is eligible to stay at RMHC Charleston?

Families of a pediatric patient (18 years or younger) who is receiving medical treatment in the Charleston Area, who live more than 40 miles from RMHC Charleston at 81 Gadsden St., Charleston, SC

Due to the Covid-19 restrictions, only 2 adults (parent/guardian/support person) will be allowed during your entire stay.  Both adults staying in the House agree to follow the rules laid out in both the House-Rules and Covid-Addendum (Covid-Addendum-Spanish)

How much does it cost to stay at the House?

No family is turned away based on ability to pay, but we suggest a $67 donation per night.

How do I get a referral for a room at the House?

RMHC Charleston accepts referrals from any medical professional. Families with an open DSS file will not be considered for residency.

How do I get in contact with a social worker?

The patient’s nurse or physician should be able to direct you to social services, or you can go to the hospital information desk.

Does a referral guarantee a room at the House?

A referral does not guarantee that a room will become available. A referral simply places the family on the waiting list.

How do I know when a room becomes available?

If a room becomes available, the Guest Services Team will contact the family and give further instructions about checking in.

What do I need to bring to check-in?

Bring photo ID for all adults, 18 and older, who will be staying overnight. Also, bring your insurance/Medicaid card and information (please note: certain insurance — or Medicaid — companies will cover the cost of lodging, but you will need to contact them in advance of your stay for pre-approval). Both adults (parent/guardian/support person) must check in at the same time.

Can I come and go as I please?

Guest families are welcome to come and go as they please using their key fob for entrance. Their room must be utilized every day for sleeping.

Do I need to bring my own blankets, sheets, pillows, etc.?

A complete set of bedding is provided by the House for you to use during your entire stay. Free laundry facilities are available for you.

Does the House allow people to smoke in their rooms?

RMHC Charleston is located on MUSC’s campus which is designated as a smoke-free environment.

What services does RMHC Charleston provide?

Bedrooms & Bathrooms: Certain bedrooms in the House have private bathrooms.  During Covid-19, families staying in bedrooms without a private bath will be assigned a private bathroom.

Kitchen Facilities: Breakfast and dinner meals are served daily to families staying in our House. The weekly meals are listed on the hallway wall near the kitchen.

Laundry Facilities: Washing machines and dryers are available for families to do their laundry at no charge. Families are asked to wipe down the laundry machines after each use and label the machines with their room number magnet.

TV Rooms & Playrooms: We offer a playroom for ages 8 and under with adult supervision required. Lucas Park, a neighborhood playground, is located outside our main entrance, where we provide toys such as scooters, balls, and more for communal use.

Parking: RMHC Charleston has no onsite parking.  Parking in MUSC/Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital is recommended.

Transportation: MUSC Public Safety will shuttle families to/from the Hospital upon request. Parking access is provided for families at the Hospital garage only. Talk with your Social Worker in regards to parking garage rates or discounts.  RMHC Charleston has only loading and unloading located at 81 Gadsden St.

MUSC Public Safety does not provide shuttle services to R. Keith Smmey Medical Pavilion in North Charleston.
