Pre-Registration

Prior to arriving at RMHC Charleston, please familiarize yourself with the following information:

Upon your notification of availability into the House, your Guest Services Manager will invite you to complete the Pre-Registration documentation online. Please note your signature indicates you are responsible for compliance with our conditions of stay for all guests registered. We highly recommend the completion of the required documentation in advance of arrival. Government Identification will be required upon arrival for all adult guests.

Staying at RMHC Charleston

ELIGIBILITY

These policies are designed to ensure the comfort and safety of our guests.  We ask that all guests, conduct themselves in a respectful manner. As a private, non-profit organization, RMHC Charleston reserves the right to refuse and evict guests, at our discretion, to ensure the safety & well-being of our guests, our volunteers, our staff, and our facility.

Please see below for new operational changes.

  • Have a child (18 years or younger) who is receiving medical treatment in the Charleston area.
    • If a parent is under the age of 18, he/she MUST be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian while staying at RMHC Charleston.
  • The child must either be an inpatient or outpatient receiving continuous treatment.
  • A referral form submitted by a medical provider primarily responsible for the child’s care must be sent to RMHC Charleston.
  • All adult guests must provide valid photo identification.
  • No one is permitted to stay who may have a contagious or an infectious disease.
  • All members of the guest family must meet RMHC Charleston requirements including all of the following:
    1. Having no current drug/alcohol abuse
    2. Having no conviction relating to domestic violence or crimes against children, including status as a registered sex offender
    3. Having no open case or conviction with the South Carolina Department of Social Services or other state’s comparable department.
WAITLIST

Unfortunately, RMHC Charleston is not able to take reservations or guarantee room availability. Families are placed on our waitlist and checked in as rooms become available. Waitlist priority is determined by the critical need of the child. We recommend that families on our Wait List make alternate arrangements in case a room is not available.

To be placed on the waitlist: 

  • Families can contact their assigned Social Worker/Case Manager to place their name on the Waitlist (Recommended).
  • Families can call our Guest Services Team anytime at 843-972-3411 and place themselves on the waitlist for their desired check-in date.
  • RMHC Charleston’s Guest Service Team confirms all procedures, surgeries, pre-ops, and outpatient appointments with medical personnel.

Waitlist procedure:

  • A member from our Guest Services Team will call you between 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. on the morning you requested accommodations to update you on availability. If we are able to confirm a room, we will schedule your check-in time. While we make every effort, we may not be able to accommodate your family. If this is the case, you can contact MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital Hospitality Department at 843-876-8456 for information regarding alternative arrangements.
  • Families will remain on our waitlist until a room is available.
CHECK-IN PROCEDURE
  • Families will be given a check-in appointment time between 9:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.
  • If check-in cannot occur during this time, please contact the Guest Services office at 843-972-3411 to make special arrangements.
  • All adults (over 18 years of age) staying at RMHC Charleston, must present photo IDs and complete the registration process prior to receiving accommodations.
  • If you or your child is covered by S.C. Medicaid insurance, please bring their updated Medicaid card.
  • Upon check-in, families are welcomed, sign-in procedures are completed and a tour of the House is conducted.
  • Returning families are required to complete the check-in procedure at each visit.
PARKING AND TRANSPORTATION
  • There is no onsite parking at RMHC Charleston. Parking in MUSC garages is recommended.
  • We have a small loading zone on Gadsden St. that can be used only during check-in and check-out.
  • MUSC Public Safety provides rides back and forth to the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital.
  • If your child is being seen at the MUSC Children’s Health – R. Keith Summey Medical Pavilion in North Charleston, it is located 9 miles from RMHC Charleston. There is no free or medical transportation provided. There are public transportation options. If you drive your car, parking is free.
COST

A daily donation of $67.00 per night is requested. However, no family is turned away due to an inability to pay. If your child has S.C. Medicaid insurance, we may be able to be reimbursed through your child’s health plan. Third-party donations are also accepted.

CHECKOUT PROCEDURES

Upon a child’s discharge from the hospital, families must visit the Guest Services Office and begin the checkout process prior to leaving.

  • We ask you to tell us how we’re doing by completing a survey. It will take less than 5 minutes. Your input is valuable to us and to our plans for the future!
  • Room keys must be returned to the front desk.
HOUSE AMENITIES

Warm Meals: Meals are provided at no cost to families. Generous donors have meals catered to the House each day for families to enjoy.

Family Kitchen: Our kitchen is stocked with basic staples and offers access to stoves, ovens, microwaves, rice cookers, pots, pans, and utensils.

Laundry Facilities: Two laundry rooms are provided free of charge and equipped with washers, dryers, and detergent.

Playroom: This fun space for ages 8 and under is equipped to encourage cognitive development through free play. Supervision is required. Toddlers with parents/guardians are welcome.

Computer Area & Free Wi-Fi: Free Wi-Fi is available with password access. Desktop computers are also available for use.

Security: A member of our Guest Services Team is awake and on-site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The House is also under video surveillance.

Gardy: Gardy, a miniature labradoodle, is our House dog. He lives here in the House and eagerly gives everyone big hugs, friendly tail wags, and loving kisses, making children and families feel relaxed and at home. Gardy was made possible through Jessica and Brett Gardner’s gracious sponsorship.
