30 Oct Jasy’s Story
Jasy seemed like a typical 14-year-old teenager who just finished up her high school volleyball season when she became ill. She visited her pediatrician, which led to a lengthy hospital stay before receiving the news that she had to start dialysis and needed a kidney transplant in order to live. Jasy’s family braced themselves to assist with her medical needs and required care in the months ahead.
In April 2020, Jasy awoke in the night struggling to breathe and was rushed to the emergency room. Her lungs had filled with fluid, requiring intubation, and her heart was only functioning at a mere 7%. She was flown to MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital by helicopter, while her family traveled from upstate South Carolina to be by her side. On their way to the hospital, they called RMHC Charleston.
Her family stayed at the House for almost two months while Jasy was in the PICU after being diagnosed with End Stage Kidney Failure in October 2020 in the midst of the COVID epidemic.
“We were allowed to stay in Room 209 this whole time. We woke to sweet art on the walls and surprises on the doors from staff. We could walk to the hospital, and we could unwind at night knowing we were steps away from our sweet girl. RMHC Charleston meant more to us than they will ever know. They were there for us when our whole world was falling apart.” – Shannon, Jasy’s Mother
On October 21st, Jasy celebrated her 3-year kidney anniversary. She is a healthy, 18-year-old looking forward to pursuing a career as a pediatric nurse helping other children facing medical uncertainties.
