Volunteering at RMHC Charleston
The warm hearts and helping hands of our volunteers make RMHC Charleston a loving and comforting ‘Home-away-from-home’ that helps strengthen families during a time when they need each other the most.
With community support and an amazing team of volunteers, we can be there for the families during this unimaginable time. We invite you to join our caring and committed team of volunteers and make a difference in the lives of our families.
Individual Volunteers
Volunteers play an important role in the day-to-day operations. They provide administrative support, keep our House clean and tidy, help during meal times, offer family support, serve as a welcoming face, and provide information to our visitors.
Things To Know:
- All volunteers must be at least 18 years old.
- Background checks are required for all volunteers.
- No court-ordered community service.
- View our Volunteer Manual for volunteer guidelines.
GUEST SERVICES VOLUNTEER:
It takes a lot of hands to make sure our House is as warm, clean and welcoming as we need it to be for our guest families. Guest Services volunteers focus their efforts on welcoming donors, guest families, visitors, and volunteers, organizing our pantry, performing administrative tasks, putting away donations, and overall helping to keep the House welcoming and comfortable.
KITCHEN VOLUNTEER:
Help us keep our kitchen warm and welcoming for our families! Our kitchen, probably just like yours, is the one place in the House where everyone gathers, as such, it requires a lot of love and care. We need volunteers who will assist in our kitchen and dining room area by visiting with families, making fresh coffee, organizing and tidying the kitchen and pantry, and orienting groups providing lunch or dinner for our families. Volunteers are not required to prepare the meal, but it may be part of the day’s tasks if no meal group is scheduled.
HOSPITALITY CART VOLUNTEER:
Hospitality Cart Volunteers are based in MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital downtown on floors 1-10 and the R. Keith Summey Medical Pavilion in North Charleston. They provide a warm and welcoming environment to families and children in critical care by making them feel comfortable and welcome. Volunteers will provide families and children with snacks, coffee/beverages, and games or other activities for the children. Volunteers help ensure the cart is clean, disinfected, organized, and well-stocked, and will ensure proper safety and COVID-19 protocols are followed. This is a position that comes into contact with children who, at times, may be extremely ill. This volunteer will need to be able to cope with seeing children and families who are enduring extreme hardship and illness. Emotional fortitude is a must. Requires a six-month, weekly commitment. FACILITY VOLUNTEER:
Not only are our facility’s volunteers handy, but they provide service with a smile. Projects range from changing light bulbs, to plumbing and electrical work, and everything in between. No two days may be alike, so be ready for anything as you work to keep our House safe and in tip top shape for our guest families.
